Stupidly Simple Pumpkin Stem Pattern

Are you tired of pumpkins yet? Continuing on with my seemingly never-ending yarn pumpkin obsession, today I want to share this super quick and ridiculously easy way to crochet a stem for your yarn pumpkins.

This stem is super quick and simple, making it easy to whip up a bunch of stems for your pumpkin patch in no time!

Last month in my 4 Ways to Spice Up Yarn Pumpkins post, I shared a simple way to make crochet stems in the round. This is the method that I’ve been using for years, but this year I’ve been experimenting with different ways of finishing my yarn pumpkins so that they look more realistic.

I am loving the grey pumpkin version

I worked up this stem iteration that I think works much better for yarn pumpkins than the round stems. As a bonus, it’s also easier than the stems worked in the round and you can make the stem as long or short as you want just by changing the starting chain length. The other thing I like about this stem, is how you can bend and twist the stems to style them and give each pumpkin a unique look.

You will need:

Yarn in the same weight as your yarn pumpkin. I’m using no. 4 medium weight yarn (Red Heart, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice)

Crochet hook in a size that matches your yarn (I’m using my favorite Boye ergonomic crochet hook in size G/4.25mm)

Tapestry needle, to weave in ends and to sew stem on pumpkin.

Scissors

This stem will work with any yarn weight, just match the weight to whatever you used to make your pumpkin.

The pattern I used for these is the Amazingly Easy and Quick Pumpkins pattern (free pattern) from Wee Warrior Crafts and the yarn that I used for these pumpkins is Lion Brand Homespun, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, and Red Heart Super Saver

Note on construction:

For these stems, you will be working into the back bump of the chain, rather than the front loop. This creates a polished look that just takes the stem to another level.

If you’ve never done this technique before, here’s a great tutorial from Crochet Arcade on where to place your hook.

Small stem:

ch 5, single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in the three remaining chains.
Fasten off, leaving a long enough tail to sew onto your pumpkin.

Long stem:

ch 7, single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook and in the 5 remaining chains.

Fasten off, leaving a long enough tail to sew onto your pumpkin.

These are the two sizes that I most frequently use, however you can change the size of your stem just by changing the starting chain length.
