Knitting Our First Christmas Stockings

White and red hand knit Christmas stockings hanging by fireplace

I love Christmas stockings almost more than the main gifts for Christmas. There’s just something about finding all the perfect small things to stuff them with that just makes me so happy!

And I’m especially excited this year cause it’s the first time my husband and I are doing stockings for each other.

This won’t be our first Christmas married, but it is the first one where we can do all the Christmas-y things together. Last year we got back from our honeymoon right before Christmas so we didn’t do stockings or really much of a tree.

This year’s gonna be different and I’ve been planning since September. I have so many plans for the holidays!

Of all the things I wanted to get done, making our Christmas stockings was at the top of my list.

The only thing that kinda worried me was getting second sock syndrome and not  making both of them.

Supplies & Pattern Used

I had a HL gift card, so the yarn I’m using is I Love This Chunky in Red Velvet and Sandstorm.

Also, shout out to my shopping assistant (aka husband) for the help with choosing yarn

The pattern I’m using for these is the Christmas Stocking pattern by Lee Lee Knits.

I used my bamboo 4.5mm circular needles from Clover, I went with a slightly smaller needle than the label indicated to give a tighter gauge. This was so that the stocking wouldn’t stretch out of shape as much with the weight of the stuffers.

This beautiful pattern uses a really simple 8 row repeat to create this lovely ripple cable. I wasn’t sure about the ripple pattern at first cause it’s different than the cables I’ve done before, but after a few repeats I was hooked. The only thing to really pay attention to is the front and back direction of the cables.

Each stocking took me about 3 weeks (I was working on them on and off), and they were the perfect project to work on during our trip to Asheville NC.

Decorating

I opted to not embroider them with names, perhaps I will later when and if we have kids, but I like the look of them unadorned. We each have our designated colour.

When I was growing up, we didn’t put the stockings out until Christmas Eve, but I worked too hard on these stocking to not have them as part of the holiday decorations.

I hung the stockings on the mantle using THESE  weighted stocking holders. I have a post planned with all of the homemade decorations I made for the Christmas season.
What’s one thing that you always put in Christmas stockings? Mine’s a chocolate orange
